Default 50 Years of Motown Magic

      Motown is 50 Years old

Motown Records, also known as Tamla Motown outside of North America, is a record label originally based in Detroit, Michigan. Founded by Berry Gordy as Tamla Records on January 12, 1959, the company was incorporated as Motown Record Corporation in 1960. The name, a portmanteau derived from the words motor and town, is also a nickname for Detroit.

Motown played an important role in the racial integration of popular music, as it was the first record label owned by an African American to primarily feature African-American artists who achieved crossover success. In the 1960s, Motown and its soul-based subsidiaries were the most successful proponents of what came to be known as "The Motown Sound", a style of soul music with a distinct pop influence.

Probaly the most famous record label in the world. It has brought us some fantastic groups over the years The Supremes, The Commodores, Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie wonder, and my favorites - The Four Tops and Gladys Knight

I love the old Motown classics, A few of my Favorites..

Nowhere to Run - Martha Reeves and the Vandellas

      Still - The Commodores

Still Waters - The Four Tops

Hats off to Motown, Gave us some fantastic tunes over the years.

All started in this little house in Detroit

Believe it or not, but I really dig Motown tunes!!!

As many of you know, we have satelite radio...XM Radio, before XM and Sirius merged, there was a great old-school station The Groove channel 64 *I think*....they had a great trademark saying...."The Groove will make you move"....anyway, since the merge I've been having a hard time finding a decent station similar to The Groove....I'll be happy when I do!

      "Now that's old-school!"

Sure we all can list at least a few Motown singers .... Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Diana Ross etc ....

But how many of us can list the musicians who were the very creators of Motown and who helped those singers climb into fame and riches!? Well, my friends until last night I could not name any of these musicians .... but now I can name a few: Joe Hunter. Eddie Willis. Robert White. Richard 'Pistol' Allen. James Jamerson. Benny 'Papa Zita' Benjamin.

If you are into Motown, this is a must see documentry on the men who created Motown.

      -------

Netflix synopsis reads out as ....

Standing in the Shadows of Motown

Director Paul Justman's music-infused documentary is based on the true story of the Funk Brothers -- the anonymous backup group that from 1959 to 1972 provided the music for nearly every hit produced by Berry Gordy's famous Motown Records. Narrated by Andre Brauer, the action revolves around a reunion of the talented musicians who lent their instruments to a multitude of hits during that amazing 13-year period.

      Length 110mins.

I will have to watch out for that polly

      on the subject of soul,

If there is one track that would get me on the dance floor back in the days its this Northern Soul classic

Ghost in my house - R Dean Taylor

Although these days I would probably end up in a heap on the floor

Anybody remember Northern Soul? There was some amazing records and some amazing All nighters to go with them

Sort of like the orginal raves without the ectasy, just fantastic music.

This was another floor filler (and still is in some clubs)
