2001: A Space Odyssey is both a classic and beautiful. Yes, it is composed and photographed beautifully, but it also has a beautiful soul---if an inanimate object, such as a strip or reel of film, can have a soul. I came to this masterpiece late, but I love it, and it becomes more meaningful to me each time I watch it.

I fondly recall when Turner Classic Movies telecast this film on New Year's Eve 2000. It started (I believe) at 11 p.m. (eastern U.S. time) on December 31 and ended sometime in the early morning of January 1, 2001. I savoured every minute.

Very cool Anjou! I read this book long before I saw the film and have to agree it was stunning and Kubrick was a great visionary to bring Arthur C Clarke's superb book to the big screen. Have to say I read all the Odyssey books and loved all of them.

2001 is indeed remarkable, poetic, visionary - it was only a couple of years ago I watched it for the first time, shocking I know. I loved it, was confused by it, but loved it! Really an epic piece of film-making, showing just how wonderful the medium can be. True art.

Yeah, i had mixed feelings about the film somehow and was overall left with a slightly depressed feeling in spite of the visual beauty. Apparently they altered significant parts from the novel to make it more 'cinematic' or dramatic, I don't know. The beautiful bits were tear-jerkingly lovely, and the hell-bits were really disturbing. Those two aspects didn't gel together that well, making the film feel uneven and a bit confused in its message. If I ever watch it again I'll only watch the first half I think

You should read the book Rory as I totally got the film having read it first but there was a lot missed out in the film which did make it a little confusing.

I have always loved this film especially as I read the Isaac Asimov book (from which this is taken) many years ago. Unfortunately, I find the older I get, the more I cry at the film and his need to be recognised for the unique being he is. If you haven't seen this film it is well worth watching.
